Abstract:

The collection is divided into four series: Correspondence; Journals; Writings; and Teaching Materials. Each series is arranged chronologically, and original folder titles were retained. Correspondence and email is incoming and outgoing, personal and professional, and includes memoirs and journal entries. Correspondents include Armen, Levon Chorbajian, the Claxtons, Dolly, Francis Fergusson, Fred, Norm Fruchter, Rachel Fruchter, Bob Hass, Leo Hamalian, Hank Heifetz, William Hjortsberg (Gatz), Helene Jaffe, John, Karen, Tom [Kashian], Leo E. Litwak, Cathleen Lynch, Robert Maniquis, Ann Martin, Marker Meonian, Jim Mohan, Arthur "Archie" Panajian, Robert Pinsky (Najarian's college roommate), publishers, Sam, Bill Slay (Babbo), students, Renate E. Victor, and Richard Yates. The journals document Najarian's daily life in Berkeley, his travels, and his time in Armenia. They are illustrated with charcoal, pen and ink, and pencil drawings, paintings and collages. They include letters and a few photographs. Writings include an elementary school notebook and writings from high school and college, juvenilia, drafts and sketches, drawings, interviews, published articles and unpublished short works, and a memoir of his cousin, the painter Arthur Pinajian. Includes drafts of "Wash Me Home Mama," "Storytime," "Daughters of Memory," "The Artist and His Mother," "The Paintings of Art Pinajian," and "The Naked and the Nude." There are also materials related to the writing classes Najarian taught at University of Hawaii, University of California, Berkeley, and San Francisco State.

Armenian-American writer, painter, and sculptor Peter Najarian (b. 1940) grew up in Union City, New Jersey. He graduated from Rutgers in 1958 and received his M.A. in Creative Writing from San Francisco State in 1970. Najarian moved to Berkeley in 1971. He spent a few years in London as a fellow at the British Film Institute and a year as a Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Yerevan in Armenia. Najarian has taught writing classes at many universities and published seven novels.
